Great Kids Halloween Costumes Ideas

Forty or fifty years ago, many or most kids Halloween costumes were made by mothers for their children. This was due in part to the facts that most kids costumes for that day were all simple gowns of flimsy material with plastic masks, that made a child become a witch, ghost, or fairy princess. The costumes for kids available today run the gamut from those same traditional kids costumes to magnificent creations costing hundreds of dollars. There are also kids costumes for the current cartoon character, or those in more questionable taste such as dressing the child as a toilet (and this is a manufactured costume currently for sale on the Internet!).

The first step in finding a great kids Halloween costume to listen to the child about what they want their Halloween costume to be. If a little girl has always wanted to be an Indian princess, even a simple version of this can be created from a simple brown dress, a headband, and a few feathers. Assembling this kids Halloween costume is not a difficult task. If a little boy has always wanted to be Superman, or a Power Ranger, there are wide spectrum of kids costumes available for his wish. It is good to remember that children's imaginations allow them truly feel like whatever kids Halloween costume they have on. A small boy that dresses like Superman will have a truly wonderful time even if he is only two feet tall and struggles with picking up his full bag of candy.

Since Halloween is recognized for only one or two evenings (a school carnival or neighborhood activity may give an opportunity for the kids Halloween costumes to get more than one wearing), taking the time to talk about and plan the kids costumes makes the activity more enjoyable. Also, remember that the costumes for kids may get additional wear around the house once the outdoor activities are over. Little boys and girls get just as much enjoyment using their Halloween costumes as pajamas, assuming that the costumes for kids are comfortable enough to sleep in.

Another step in finding a good Halloween costume is to remember the purposes that the kids costume will be used for. If the children are trick or treating in the neighborhood, or joining a neighborhood group at the park for games and treats, then the Halloween costume will get a good deal of wear. It should not be so complex or constricting that it will make the games difficult to play, or that the child will lay down some accessories and lose them. It may not seem like much to a parent for a princess to lose her magic wand, but it may be part of a kids costume that will be missed for weeks.

Finally, remember that a little effort may result in a kids Halloween costume that is memorable for years. One year a small girl went to a Halloween festival in an elephant costume, but this elephant was purple with white polka dots on the outside of the costume. Her mother had gone to the fabric store with her to select the material, and this kids Halloween costume was remembered fondly for years in the family. It is not necessary to be able to make such elaborate costumes, but the time spent talking and planning for the Halloween costume with the child is treasured and remembered.

BIRDPRAYERS - behind the screens

Birdprayers (2007-now) Multi-discipliner ongoing project Birdprayers is a response to the contentious issue of religious conflict. Believing that art in public space is one of the most effective means of deconstructing stereotypes, and creating an awareness of diversity and differences. An individual's perspective is closely related to personal values and judgments, but also to the feeling of safety and comfort in one's own environment. Birdprayers attempts to address the relativity of these feelings and people's sometimes rigid adherence to them. It is an interdisciplinary, intercultural and ongoing art project, which, to strengthen its power to achieve its goals, will be constructed around the world in versions specific to the locale. Each edition of Birdprayers will be accompanied by the video performance "All in the Mind", and will include a combination of installations, sculptures, drawings, paintings, prints, readings, discussions and other forms of communication, sometimes in collaboration with other artists. Till now we made three editions of the project: one on Bali (with an exhibition in Sika Gallery with paintings, drawings and sculptures) one in Yogyakarta in Indonesia (with a discussion at IVAA, Indonesian Visual Arts Archieve) and one in Istanbul. The next one will be very soon, in The Hague in The Netherlands. This is to put it all into different perspectives. Why Are So Many Drawn to the Dance of Ballet?

Who can resist the dance? The graceful beauty of dancers around the world continues to move into the hearts and minds of children everywhere. From the poorest homes to the richest estates, children are drawn to ballet dancers and their fairy tale costumes like nothing else. From the time they can walk, many children find themselves doing whatever they can to convince their parents to let them attend a local ballet class.

Although it emerged centuries ago as a dance interpretation of fencing it has become much more refined through the years. The techniques developed and used in ballets now have a strong influence on many areas of modern dance, including ballroom dancing and even new interpretations, such as hip hop ballet. Popular T.V. shows such as "So You Think You Can Dance" are consistently filled with contestants who have or are still attending ballet school. Some even go on to teach dancing styles of their own.

In fact, with so many options available to the aspiring dancer, it isn't very surprising that dancing seems to attract people from so many different walks of life. For some, this is not only an obvious extension of personal expression, but a way to a much better life.

Is it any wonder why little girls (and boys) find themselves drawn to the beauty of dance in a world that sometimes seems so drab and harsh in comparison? Give a child a pair of ballet shoes and access to some basic classes and they are on the way to their own private dream come true, regardless of whether they become famous, world renowned dancers or not.

Ballet started as the dance interpretation of fencing and over the centuries morphed into what it is today. As techniques became more and more refined, its influence on other areas of dance increased. Today, you can see how classical ballet has affected styles of ballroom dancing and the newer hip hop ballet.

No matter what the style of dance though, the ability to draw people in is universal. The popularity of ballet school and shows like "So You Think You Can Dance" prove just how attractive dance can be. In fact, it is the chance to become successful, for just about anyone with talent and a whole lot of drive, and break into the world of dance that makes it such an attractive opportunity for people from all walks of life.

Reasons for being drawn into the dance can vary as widely as the opportunities that are available. This activity is one of the few things available to just about anyone. If your child is hitting you up for such classes, then start out small.

Take them to the local theater and let them see a show. Get them into some basic classes and let them see what it is all about. After all, you may find you have the next Evelyn Cisneros or Mikhail Baryshnikov living right in your own home.

Gift Ideas for Christmas

Finding the perfect gift has to be one of the most anxiety-filled, frustrating, time consuming things we do. How about taking a look at some ideas for Christmas gifts that I
have compiled. If you are like me, you probably have to buy for all age groups and both sexes. It's not that hard, and sometimes it's as easy as just asking!

Ideas for Women

The over 18 crowd. What do women want? First of all, what women DO NOT want is anything that has to do with housework. Don't think it's a great idea to buy a vacuum cleaner or a new ironing board for Christmas.BIG no-no. Women are often both bread winners as well as mothers and housekeepers. Great ideas for women include simple gifts like candles, perfumes, and jewelry, to gifts that range from finding the perfect spa to gourmet treats to a gift certificate at her favorite beauty salon. Personalized gifts can be a real hit if you can find something she collects in her spare time.

Gifts for Men

Depending on the man you are shopping for, a gift can be of a personal nature or more mainstream. While getting a woman a traditonal household gift may not be a good idea, buying a toolbox full of nifty tools may be just the right thing for him. Does he like sports? How about buying tickets to his favorite sports event? If he's a golf nut, what about a really nice driver or putter? Perhaps coupons to play a free game at his favorite golf course? And like women, gourmet gift baskets like his favorite beef jerky, or even steaks can be bought for the man in your life. Really!

Gifts for Girls

Younger girls love dolls. Baby dolls, barbie dolls, Tiny dolls, and all the accessories that go with them. Another thing girls love are hide-aways. Big tents and playhouses give her the feeling that it's her little domain to play make-believe. Another big hit with girls is arts and crafts. Painting, coloring, beads, jewelry making; anything she can create on her own, and especially show off to her friends! Anything that spruces up her room and makes it more personal is also a great gift idea.

Gifts for Teen Girls

Music, Movies, and Gift certificates. Teen aged girls will tell you that with these three things you can't go wrong. Stuff her stocking with perfumes, makeup, and earrings, and you have yourself a very happy young woman. Of course, as they get older, they will tell you that good old cash is also a big favorite with them, so perhaps you could mix money and gifts to make for a perfect holiday, and a smiling teen!

Gifts for Boys

Boys love action and movement! Bikes, bike accessories, trampolines, scooters, balls, and more balls are perfect gifts for young boys. For quieter times, Playstation games, and all things construction! Building blocks like legos and Lincoln logs are long standing favorites for any boy. Don't forget that young boys love cars, trucks, motorcycles, rockets and planes. Whether he just wants to pretend with them, or wants to build them, anything motorized is a great idea for boys.

Gifts for Teen Boys

Like teenaged girls, Music, Movies and Gift Certificates are always a great idea. Does he play a musical instrument? Does he like sports? Is he always looking for ways to fix up his car? Of course, hard cash is a favorite as well. Anything to do with gaming equipment for Playstations and Xboxes are fun, if that is what he is into. Perhaps he shows an interest in photography. Help get him started with video and photography equipment. Ask him what his hobbies are, and find a plethora of ideas for teenaged boys.

Gifts for Pets

It's amazing the amount of gift ideas out there for animals. Pets love to be included in the festivities, and looking for gifts for them is a lot of fun. Cat toys, dog toys, scrumptious treats from simple to gourmet are out there for your favorite pet. New collars, leashes, houses, beds, blankets and even a new costume makes a pet feel especially appreciated, and will love to extra attention lavished on them from others.

Buying the perfect gift takes a little ingenuity, but lots of us draw blanks. It happens to all of us. Take a few moments to really think a gift through, and your loved ones are going to adore the gift you give. It truly is the thought that counts!
